Civil Wars in Lebanon -
(October 2007) with foreword
by George Asseily. Introduction: Youssef M. Choueiri.
Sandwiched between Syria
and Israel, Lebanon is perhaps fated to be engulfed in the frequent bouts
of violence that plague the wider Middle East region. In summer 2006, Beirut
found itself once more under siege as Israeli missiles rained upon the capital.
More often than not, however, the fighting has been internal Lebanon
has suffered frequent civil wars throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Iraq:
The Regional Fallout : (Feb 2003). The Chatham
House Briefing Paper which included the Centre for Lebanese Studies' then
director, Nadim Shehadi, as one of the contributors.
The war on Iraq, as perceived in early 2003, could easily create
more problems than it would solve and not just for Iraq. All the neighbours
have a stake in its future polity and economy, and neither a social collapse
nor a forceful US occupation will make for regional stability. Experts from
the RIIA Middle East Programme examined the potential regional fallout.
The briefing paper examined three scenarios
and their possible impact on neighbouring countries such as Iran, Saudi Arabia,
Turkey, Jordan and Syria.
The following publications have been available since November 2003.
Struggle
in The Levant - Lebanon in the 1950s by Caroline Attie
The 1950s in Lebanon were marked by bitter in-fighting, slander,
rivalry and rumour. Caroline Attie's book seeks to explain the truth behind
the intrigues that dominated by country for a decade. It aims to correct, for
example, the misperceptions surrounding the role of foreign interventionism
and looks for fact behind the rumours. Did the Egyptians and Syrians provide
support for the rebels? Did Camille Chamoun try to amend a constitution to allow
him a second presidential term?
Lebanon
and Arabism by Raghid El Solh
This work traces the interaction between Arab nationalism and
Lebanese local sentiments between 1936 and 1945, a period characterized by significant
change at the international and local levels. It highlights the developments
which affected the official position of Lebanese towards Arabism - a progression
from initial scepticism to active involvement in founding the Arab regional
system in the mid 1940s.
The
View from Istanbul by Abdul Rahim Abu Husayn
This work makes detailed studies and extensive use of Ottoman
chancery documents, aiming to fill many gaps in the historical record. It sets
out to answer such questions as: how did the Ottomans run their empire? How
did they view Lebanon? What were their prime concerns in the region?
